More than just another law firm - we're the team that gets how messy international business can actually get
Look, we're not gonna spin you some corporate fairy tale about "visionary founders." The truth? Three lawyers got tired of watching clients struggle with firms that either didn't understand tech or didn't understand international markets. Usually both.
So back in 2012, we grabbed a corner table at a cafe on King Street and basically hammered out what became Aetherion Vexora on napkins. The name? Yeah, it's a bit dramatic - but we wanted something that'd stand out when you're scrolling through fifty law firms that all sound the same.
What made us different wasn't some fancy strategy deck. It was simple: we'd actually worked in-house at tech companies and multinationals before going into private practice. We knew what kept executives up at night because we'd been in those same late-night meetings.
Here's the thing about corporate law - most firms treat it like checking boxes on a compliance form. We've never been into that. When a client comes to us with a cross-border acquisition, we're thinking about time zones, cultural differences, regulatory quirks that nobody publishes in their guidelines.
One time, we had a client trying to acquire a European software company. The deal was stalling because nobody'd considered that their IP licensing structure was totally incompatible with Canadian tax law. Took us three weeks of late nights, but we restructured the whole thing in a way that actually saved them money compared to their original plan.
That's what we mean by "precision and innovation" - though honestly, it's more like being stubborn enough to find solutions that others miss because they're rushing to billable hours.
Intellectual property isn't just about filing patents and trademarks - though yeah, we do plenty of that. It's about understanding what actually gives your business value and making sure nobody can swipe it.
We've represented everyone from AI startups protecting their algorithms to fashion brands dealing with knockoffs in five different countries. The common thread? Most folks don't realize their IP strategy needs to evolve as fast as their business does.
Had a fintech client once who'd built this incredible fraud detection system. They'd patented the core tech but hadn't thought about trade secret protection for their training data. When an employee left for a competitor, we had to get creative - and fast. Ended up with an injunction and a settlement that made them whole, but it could've been avoided with the right setup from day one.
Not gonna lie, it's been a ride - here're the moments that actually mattered
Started with three partners, one assistant, and way too much coffee. First office was basically a glorified closet near Bay Street.
Represented a Canadian gaming company in a patent dispute that everyone said we'd lose. We didn't. That case put us on the map in tech circles.
Moved to our current spot at 181 Bay Street. Added employment law and data privacy practices because clients kept asking for help with those things anyway.
Like everyone else, went remote overnight. Unlike everyone else, we used it to expand our international practice since geography suddenly mattered less.
Closed over $2B in M&A deals and filed 300+ IP applications. Team grew to 45 people. Still feels weird calling ourselves a "mid-size firm."
Working with clients across 15 countries. Still answering our own phones sometimes. Still figuring things out as we go - just with better coffee now.
We're not big on corporate headshots and stuffy bios, but here's who's actually doing the work
Senior Partner - IP & Tech Law
Started her career at a big Silicon Valley firm before moving back home to Toronto. She's the one who convinces patent examiners that yes, that algorithm actually is patentable. Outside work, she's weirdly into competitive baking shows.
Managing Partner - M&A
Handled over 200 cross-border deals and still gets nervous before major negotiations (don't tell the other side). Used to work in-house at a pharma company, which is why he actually understands how businesses operate. Collects vintage maps for some reason.
Partner - Corporate Governance
The person you want in the room when things get complicated. Spent five years at the OSC before joining us, so she knows compliance inside and out. Makes surprisingly good dad jokes for someone who's not a dad. Marathon runner who still hates running.
Senior Associate - Employment Law
Joined us from a labour law boutique where she represented both employers and employees - which gives her a unique perspective. She's the one who tells executives when their brilliant idea is actually gonna get them sued. Speaks four languages, swears in five.
Associate - Data Privacy
Our resident GDPR and PIPEDA expert who somehow makes privacy law interesting. Started as a software developer before going to law school, which makes him dangerous in tech negotiations. Undefeated champion of office trivia nights.
Partner - Commercial Litigation
The guy you call when things have gone completely sideways and you're headed to court. Former Crown prosecutor who knows his way around a courtroom better than his own kitchen. Intimidating in depositions, absolute softie with his rescue dogs.
We don't do long-term retainers because we think we deserve them. Clients come back because we actually solve problems instead of just documenting them in 50-page memos.
One of our oldest clients - a manufacturing company doing business in 12 countries - once told us they stay with us because we're the only firm that doesn't make them feel stupid for asking questions. That stuck with me. Legal stuff is complicated, and pretending it isn't doesn't help anyone.
We answer emails on weekends (maybe too much, our families would say). We explain things without fifty layers of qualifiers. And when we don't know something, we say so and figure it out instead of billing you for research we should've already known.
Whether you're dealing with a thorny IP issue, trying to close a deal, or just need someone to tell you if your legal strategy makes sense - we're here for it.
